Introduction to Schools School of Atmospheric Science
The history of School of Atmospheric ScienceiSASjof NUIST can be traced back to the Department of Meteorology of Nanjing Institution of Meteorology which was founded in 1960. In 1981, it was authorized to offer Master’s Degree program for weather dynamics and climatology majors. In 1993, SAS started program for Doctor’s Degree. In 1999, the Atmospheric Sciences was approved as a class A disciplinary unit which was authorized to grant doctoral degree and set up post-doctoral workshops. The Meteorology was rated as Key Primary Discipline in 2008 and supported by Priority Academic Program Development in 2011 by Jiangsu Province. In recent years, the SAS has been vigorously building a Special Development Zone for Atmospheric Sciences Discipline. SAS boasts a training base for meteorological personnel. Its basic meteorology research and application ranks top in China. Over the past 50 years, SAS has fostered a large number of outstanding graduates. Among them, some has become Academicians (home and abroad), National 1000-Talents Plan Talents, Distinguished Young Scholars (home and abroad), 100-Talents Plan Talents and tenured Professors. SAS has established cooperative relationship on scientific research and personnel training with over 20 overseas renowned universities. Up to now, SAS has developed several distinctive and mature research directions, such as Meteorological Data Assimilation Research and Application, Typhoon and Mesoscale Meteorology Research, Atmospheric Circulation and Climate Dynamics; Monsoon and Sea-Land-Air Interaction, Numerical Modelling Research and Short-term Climate Prediction, Climate Change and Regional Response. Each direction is led by National “1000-Talents Plan” talent and Distinguished Professors of Jiangsu Province. School of Atmospheric Physics
School of Atmospheric Physics was established in August, 2008, the predecessor of which is Department of Atmospheric Physics, one of the several departments with a long history in NUIST. Based on development for over fifty years, a whole system of undergraduate and graduate education has been formed and now our school has been a major undertaker of intellectual training in atmospheric physics of China. Currently two majors are offered for undergraduate students: Atmospheric Science in three fields (Atmospheric Physics, Weather Modification, Atmospheric Sounding and Lightning Protection Science and Technology. At postgraduate level, we offer three majors for master and PhD programs: Atmospheric Physics & Atmospheric Environment, Atmospheric Remote Sensing Science & Technology and Lightning Science & Technology. The School of Atmospheric Physics boasts 1 Provincial Key Discipline, 1 National Key Construction Discipline and 2 Provincial excellent Scientific and Technical Innovation Teams. Our School has a fine environment and advanced facilities for teaching and research. Several research institutions have been established such as Key Opening Laboratory for Aerosol and cloud precipitation of CMA, Integrated Observation, Training and Practice Base of CMA, Laboratory for Radar, Satellite and Remote Sensing and Laboratory for Lightning Protection. Over 600 instruments are in service for various research projects and experiments.
School of Applied Meteorology
The forerunner of this school was the Department of Agricultural Meteorology which was founded in 1960 by Mr. Feng Xiuzao, China’s famous agricultural meteorologist. In August 2006, the Department of Agricultural Meteorology was expanded in to today’s School of Applied Meteorology. Currently, we have two undergraduate majors in Applied Meteorology and Agricultural Resources & Environment. The school covers three Master’s programs in Applied Meteorology, Biology and City Meteorology, and two doctorate branches in City Meteorology and Applied Meteorology. Applied Meteorology is the key discipline of China Meteorology Bureau and the second batch of national specialty discipline. It is internationally renowned for its excellent teaching and research in agri-meteorology. We have advanced teaching facilities including Class A Agricultural Meteorology Experimental Station of CMA, Key Laboratory for Agricultural Meteorology of Jiangsu Province, Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Agricultural Meteorology of Jiangsu Province, Research Center for Terrestrial carbon water cycle and Climate Change, Analysis Laboratory of Agricultural Resources and Environment, Laboratory for Agricultural Resources and Environment Information Technology, Joint Base of Scientific Experiment of Drought in Eastern China.
School of Marine Science
The formation of the Program in Oceanography at the School of Atmospheric Sciences in 2003 marks NUIST’s initial effort to provide a formal advanced education in Marine Sciences. Since then it has evolved through several phases: in the same year, it began to admit undergraduate students; in 2006, it was authorized to grant the degree of Bachelor of Science; soon after it was approved by the NUIST as a key specialty discipline. In 2008, it was appointed as a key disciplinary field by China Meteorological Administration (CMA). In January 2012, it was formally transitioned into an independent school. Currently, we have one undergraduate program in the Marine Sciences with two directions which are Marine Meteorology and Physical Oceanography, and one master’s and one doctoral program in marine meteorology. The School is proud of its 25 faculties, among them there are one Jiangsu Chair Professor and nine Professors with various specialties. Besides, seven renowned international scholars have joined us as guest professors. Over 50% of the faculty members have educational backgrounds or work experiences in Western countries; more than one third have been awarded with various teaching prizes. Marine meteorology, air-sea interaction, air-sea numerical simulation and marine remote sensing & monitoring characterize the cross-multidisciplinary features of our school. The School has a whole practical teaching system, composed of a complete marine science curriculum and state-of-the-art teaching facilities. These include a fundamental fluid mechanics laboratory, a water tunnel for wind-wave-current interactions, a computational fluid dynamics laboratory, a marine biology and chemistry laboratory, and a planetary fluid dynamic laboratory. Besides, we have eight teaching and research bases in collaboration with sea-grant institutions and organizations nationwide to provide internship opportunities.
School of Hydrometeorology
School of Hydrometeorology was established in June, 2011, which is the first school of Hydrometeorology in China and the second globally. The dean of our school, Professor Lin Bingzhang, is a chief scientist in hydrometeorology and many relevant fields at NOAA, US. Now the school owns master and doctoral programs in atmospheric science (hydrometeorology) and bachelor program in hydrometeorology. The school of hydrometeorology has been a teaching organization and Applied Hydrometeorology Research Institute (AHMRI) as well as a research institute, which consists of Hydrometeorological Science and Research Lab (HSRL, focused on science and research of hydrometeorology), Engineering Hydrometeorological Application Lab (EHAL, focused on application of hydrometeorology in engineering and economic production), Climate Change Strategy Lab (CCSL, focused on long term impacts of climate change on hydrometeorology and strategy) and Flash Flood Research Center (FFRC). Leading by Dean Lin Bingzhang, our school now undertakes two projects with Special Fund for Scientific Research in the public Interest, granted by the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Science &Technology. One contract research project is from Civil Engineering Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the other project is supported by the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation etc. A project from the “12th Five-Year Plan” to support science and technology program and the collaboration with Taiwan are both in preparation. There are 19 full-time faculty members, 14 of them are teachers, and there are two professors and one associate professor. Teachers under 50 years old hold Doctorate Degree. Seven internationally renowned experts and several famous professors from home and abroad are appointed as part-time professors in our school. The aims of the school are to resolve the major issues that related to extreme hydrometeorological disasters with respect to the infrastructures and the national economy in China, to train a number of interdisciplinary research talents in hydrometeorology, to set up a world class research team, to educate young talents towards the establishment of a new academic subject of hydrometeorology as well as the establishment of a new major of hydrometeorology in China, and to promote international science and technology exchanges in the related areas.
