Postdoctoral researcher in Marine Biogeochemistry

Project title:

Coupled cycling of phosphorus, iron and manganese in the Black Sea: elucidating the controls on mineral formation and burial in an anoxic basin

Phosphorus (P), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) are all nutrients that are required by phytoplankton in the ocean. Changes in the cycling of these elements can have a major impact on marine ecosystems.

This project focusses on the processes leading to formation of particulate P, Fe and Mn in the water column, and the fate of particulates upon sinking and burial in the sediment. The study area is the largest permanently anoxic basin on Earth, the Black Sea. A research cruise to the Black Sea is planned for end of spring/early summer in 2013. The outcome of this project will greatly advance our understanding of the biogeochemistry of anoxic marine environments.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with experience in experimental biogeochemistry and a PhD degree in geochemistry, geology, oceanography, environmental sciences or a related field. He/she should communicate easily in English, both verbally and in writing. Candidates should be able to work in a team, but also independently.

Terms of employment:

The successful candidate will be offered a full-time postdoc position at Utrecht University for three years.
