Strategic Marine Manager

The Environment Agency operates at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; reduce the risk of flooding; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate. Join us as a Strategic Marine Manager and you’ll play an important role in ensuring that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.

The role

As our Strategic Marine Manager for South East England, your remit will be huge – not to mention hugely important. You will cover 1,250km of coastline, from Dorset in the west to the Essex border in the east. This coastline is complex and challenging, with numerous pressures and a rich cultural and natural heritage. It’s densely populated. It’s the most economically important marine region in the UK. And it’s a highly valued environmental asset, with a third of the country’s designated Shellfish Waters, a quarter of the Bathing Waters and a high number of internationally important wildlife sites.

We want you to lead and champion marine issues on this vitally important coastline, driving and delivering a challenging programme of environmental improvements and measures. For example, you’ll help achieve good ecological status in our waterbodies by 2027, deliver water quality and fisheries improvements and reduce flood risk to communities. Altogether, your work will help us to build a better understanding of the marine environment here. As you appreciate, collaboration’s the key to success: working closely with local partners, colleagues and community groups, you’ll develop a shared vision for the marine environment, and turn this vision into collaborative projects and actions.

About you

Firstly, you share our passion for the coastline. You should have proven environmental experience, preferably in a marine environment. We’d also like you have experience of managing strategic programmes of work across a wide geographic area. A great builder of relationships and networks, you understand the value and importance of collaboration. In fact, you’ll be able show us where you’ve delivered environmental outcomes in partnership with others, senior decision makers and external stakeholders in particular. You’re politically aware too, and work hard to keep the diverse needs of our customers at the heart of everything you do. Strong problem solving skills are essential, as is the ability to make informed decisions.

You could work from either of our area offices in Worthing, or in our Kent and South London office in Addington, Kent. In return, we offer a competitive package with a range of benefits and the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment.
