Research Assistant (2 Posts)

Newcastle University has two short-term vacancies for research assistants to work within the framework of the project “Understanding and addressing the impact of threats to marine ecosystems/biodiversity in the UK Overseas Territories in the Caribbean” funded by Defra. The project extends work completed for the four-year FORCE project (2010-2014) regional initiative funded by the EU to the UK Caribbean overseas territories (UKCOTs); it represents an exciting and innovative ecosystem approach to managing Caribbean coral reefs in the face of climate change, with particular emphasis on UK interests.

This is a unique opportunity to use interdisciplinary research approaches to support effective coral reef management. You will work on a project which aims to identify major threats to coral reef health and the most appropriate management interventions for the UKOTs and governance structures to support their implementation. Duties will include assessing the efficacy of management tools and likely impacts on socio-economics at local, national and regional levels. You will have an MSc (or equivalent) in an area related to coral reef governance and/or marine resources management, and ideally have experience in scientific support for policy development. A sound knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods with an emphasis on social, political and institutional arrangements for marine resources management will be advantageous. The ability to work in diverse, sometimes remote overseas working conditions as an individual or part of a team is essential.

Two posts are available, 6 months and 12 months, and the possibility of extending these into PhDs for interested candidates can be discussed. Extensive travel is required, and if successful you will spend most of your time overseas in Anguilla, the Cayman Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The closing date for applications is Monday 24th September 2012. Candidates shortlisted for interview will be notified by Friday 28th September. Interviews anticipated week of 1st October. Start date: immediate or as soon as possible

For futher information please email Dr Clare Fitzsimmons;
Salary: £25,251 – £26,004

Closing Date: 24 September 2012
