Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Aquaculture Service (FIRA) and the direct supervision of a Senior Aquaculture Officer (Economics, Policy, Planning and Governance), the incumbent will contribute to the Service’s work on social, economic, policy and governance aspects of aquaculture development.

POSITION TITLE: Aquaculture Officer (Economics) GRADE LEVEL: P3

DUTY STATION: Rome, Italy

ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: Aquaculture Service, FIRA Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Use and Conservation Division, FIR

DURATION : Fixed Term: 3 years

In particular, the incumbent will:

Collect and analyse economic, socio-economic and institutional data with the aim of producing information needed in developing and implementing policies, strategies and plans for sustainable aquaculture development; prepare detailed micro-economic, investment and /or social studies and reports on aquaculture planning and development issues; provide support to or participate in the preparation and delivery of workshops or other technical meetings aimed at contributing to sustainable development of aquaculture, especially in developing countries; formulate and  provide technical backstopping of FAO field projects on aquaculture economics, policies, strategies and plans; advise FAO Member countries in the development and implementation of policies, strategies and plans for sustainable aquaculture development; perform other related duties as required by supervisors.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should meet the following:

Advanced university degree in Aquaculture Economics, Agricultural Economics, Resource Economics or Economics Five years of relevant experience in the application of micro and macro-economic analysis techniques to natural resource use and/or management, out of which at least 3 years in the field of aquaculture. A Ph.D. may substitute for up to 2 years Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Russian, Arabic or Chinese

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Relevance and level of academic qualifications .
  • Relevance and extent of experience in applying economic theory to aquaculture management and development .
  • Extent of experience in developing and implementing aquaculture development policies, strategies  and plans .
  • Depth of knowledge of current global issues, in particular social, economic and institutional issues, in relation to management, development and governance of aquaculture .
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to effectively communicate in English and French, both in writing and orally.
