Programme Specialist interactive marine spatial database

If you have a postgraduate qualification in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science (with a specialism in spatial mapping), Data Management or a related field, you can play a central part within the Ocean Observation and Services Section of UNESCO.

Strengthening a dedicated small team, you will be responsible for the development of an interactive marine spatial database indicating the state of the global ocean ecosystems, supporting the science-policy interface. This will involve liaising with wide-ranging experts and data providers in ocean science, whilst contributing to reports on the adequacy of information-generating arrangements. At the same time, you will advance common data infrastructures with our partners, involving extensive interaction with stakeholders from project funder the European Commission and other bodies.

Ideally you will join us with a background in marine and ecological science, and you will certainly bring professional experience of developing relevant spatial information systems. Impressive research, analytical and problem solving skills are paramount, alongside sound judgment and highly developed project management abilities, and you will be capable of balancing conflicting priorities against inflexible deadlines. Finally, you should preferably be familiar with ocean observing techniques and information generation, and your good command of English should ideally be backed by working knowledge of French.

To apply please submit a CV, a letter of motivation, and a list of three references that may be contacted, to: Sarah Grimes,, by 21 September 2012
