Research Fellow Flood MEMORY Project

Ocean & Earth Science at the University of Southampton is seeking a Research Fellow to contribute to the multi-disciplinary and multi-partner EPSRC-funded Flood MEMORY (Multi-Event Modelling Of Risk & recoverY) Project.
Led by the University of Newcastle, the project will undertake research to investigate the effects of temporal clustering of flood events on natural, built and socio-economic systems with memory, in order to identify critical vulnerabilities. The findings will enable better allocation of resources for protection and recovery, and improve flood resilience both for present and projected climate scenarios.
The successful candidate will focus on the coastal aspect of this project working alongside a Research Fellow from Queen Mary, University of London. Primarily they will employ statistical techniques for the analysis of historical time series with the aim of specifying stochastic models that reproduce the higher-order statistics of the underlying stochastic processes at multi-timescales. In addition, they will investigate the effects of repeated storm impact on the Sefton coast, generating scenario storm cluster conditions in Liverpool Bay to drive the XBeach coastal morphodynamic model.
With a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications the successful candidate will be experienced in oceanography, statistics, coastal engineering, coastal geomorphology or related area. They will prepare guidance materials for the use of the developed Flood MEMORY approach and regularly disseminate findings by taking the lead in preparing publication materials for referred journals, presenting results at conferences, participating in workshops or exhibiting work at other appropriate events, and providing material for the project web site.
For an informal discussion before starting the application process, please contact Dr Ivan Haigh on 02380 59 6501.
