Applications are invited for a one year Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work with the Dean of Natural and Environmental Sciences, Professor Steve Hawkins in the general area of experimental coastal ecology. The appointee will focus on research in Ecology and Management of the Coast (both natural and artificial habitats) in the context of flood risk from rising sea levels and increased urbanisation under supervision of the award holder. The appointee will work with the award holder (Professor S. J. Hawkins) on the EC FP7 THESEUS project http://www.theseusproject.eu/and the Esmee Fairbairn funded URBANE project http://urbaneproject.org/. These linked projects are looking at ecologically sensitive design of sea defences (URBANE & THESEUS) in the context of rising and stormier sea, as well as management measures to maximise biodiversity of urbanised coastlines (URBANE), including the ecology of former commercial docks. These are multi-partner projects involving a large consortium of engineers, socio- economists and ecologists (THESEUS) and a team of ecologists at Bangor, Aberystwyth, Oban, Liverpool, Plymouth and Southampton (URBANE – which will be led from Southampton, working with the lead scientist (Professor S.J. Hawkins).
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in marine biology or ecology or in an environmental science and relevant experience including field experimentation, surveys and statistical analysis including multivariate statistics, GIS. An interest in applied coastal ecology (including links with engineering) would be helpful but not essential. Experience of modelling would be also helpful, but not essential.
This fixed-term appointment for one year may lead to a longer fixed term PDRA depending on performance and funding. The position might suit someone just finishing a Ph.D., because part-time working may also be available (60-80%).
Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Steve Hawkins, telephone 02380 593596 or 07775 801853 (S.J.Hawkins@soton.ac.uk), Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, University of Southampton.
The closing date for applications is 22 August 2012. Please visit www.jobs.soton.ac.uk and apply on-line, or call 023 8059 2750 for an application form. Your completed application should include (i) the application form; (ii) your Curriculum Vitae; (iii) the names and addresses of two referees.
