Research Officer

The School of Ocean Sciences at Bangor University is involved in a £1.4M Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) renewable energy project “The effects of realistic tidal flows on the performance and structural integrity of tidal stream turbines”. We wish to appoint an oceanographic modeller to simulate the environmental impact of tidal stream turbine array operation. In particular, the focus will be on modelling the impact on sediment dynamics and morphodynamics, compared to the natural range of inter-annual and inter-seasonal variability.   The successful candidate will be based in the School of Ocean Sciences, Menai Bridge, under the supervision of Dr Simon Neill and Prof. Alan Davies. The Research Officer will setup and run three-dimensional oceanographic model simulations at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. He/she will parameterise tidal stream array operation in the oceanographic model by incorporating actuator disc theory into the model source code. The Research Officer will form part of a wider team of multi-institutional scientists and engineers investigating the environmental impacts of tidal energy extraction and, conversely, the impact of the environment on tidal energy arrays.

Applications are invited from candidates with a PhD in oceanography, civil engineering, earth sciences, or a related discipline. The candidate should have extensive numerical modelling experience, including development of model source code. A proven track record as lead author on scientific research publications in peer-reviewed literature is desirable. Knowledge and understanding of renewable energy is also desirable, as is experience with sediment dynamics.

The successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible and the post is available for a period of 36 months.

Application forms and further particulars should be obtained by contacting Human Resources, Bangor University;  tel: (01248) 382926/383865;  e-mail:; web:   Please quote reference number 12-11/265 when applying.

Closing date for applications: 1.00 p.m. Friday 03 August 2012.   Informal enquiries can be made by contacting Dr Simon Neill, email: ; tel. +44 (0)1248 383938.   Committed To Equal Opportunities
